BetMGM began streaming live dealer blackjack, roulette and baccarat directly from MGM Grand and Bellagio in Las Vegas into Alberta on August 20, five weeks after the province opened its regulated iGaming market to private operators. The games run on Playtech's live-casino technology and include "Dual Play" tables, where players betting online from Alberta share the same table and the same dealer as people sitting on the physical casino floor in Nevada.

The lineup includes MGM Grand Live American Roulette, MGM Grand Live Roulette, Bellagio Live Roulette, MGM Grand Live Baccarat and Bellagio Live Baccarat. Instead of building a purpose-made studio, BetMGM is piping its parent's own casino floor across the border and into a market it entered only weeks ago.

"Live dealer bridges the gap between online gaming and the casino floor, creating a more immersive and engaging experience for players," said Rob Passerino, director of gaming at BetMGM.

The physical casino is now an export

BetMGM is the 50-50 joint venture between MGM Resorts International and Entain, and this launch is the clearest sign yet of what that structure is actually for. A studio-only supplier can build a realistic set, but it cannot sell a bet placed at the real Bellagio table a tourist is sitting at right now. MGM's Las Vegas properties give the joint venture a live-casino asset none of its studio-based rivals can copy without owning a casino floor of their own, and Alberta is the first Canadian market where that asset has shown up as a product rather than a marketing line.

It also lands inside a busy five weeks for the province. Alberta opened to private operators on July 13 with 22 live on day one, ending PlayAlberta's monopoly. BetMGM has already used the market to extend its Marriott Bonvoy loyalty tie-up north of the border, and supplier Playson used the same window to extend its Betty Casino deal into the province in early August. The live-dealer launch is BetMGM's third distinct Alberta move in as many weeks, each one a different lever: loyalty, third-party content, and now a physical-asset product its rivals cannot license their way into.

The authenticity pitch echoes BetMGM's livestreamed real slot machines from Aristocrat's Awager unit, launched in New Jersey earlier this month. Between the two, BetMGM now has two separate ways of selling "this is a real casino floor, not a random number generator" to players, one built on physical slot cabinets and one built on its own resort properties. Both bets are on the same idea: that authenticity, not just game count, is what differentiates an online casino once every operator's slot library looks roughly the same.

What it means for Alberta players

For bettors in Alberta, the practical change is table selection rather than odds. Dual Play tables let a player watch and bet on the same live stream a Las Vegas floor customer is playing on, with the dealer, chips and other players all real rather than studio-staged. It is a different feel from a purpose-built live-casino studio, and it is the kind of differentiator BetMGM is betting will matter in a province where 22 operators are already competing for the same new player base.

Whether that translates into a lasting edge depends on execution the desk cannot yet measure: latency across the US-Canada stream, table availability at peak hours, and whether MGM's floor operations can support online demand without disrupting the in-person experience the whole pitch depends on. Watch Alberta's next wave of supplier and operator announcements for whether rivals answer with their own physical-asset plays or double down on studio-built alternatives instead.
