**Louisiana regulators did not renew DraftKings' sports betting licence on Thursday, 15 October. The Gaming Control Board granted a conditional extension to 19 February 2027 instead, while it examines how the operator uses artificial intelligence.**

The vote was unanimous, according to coverage of the meeting. Without it, the licence would have expired on 10 November. The full renewal hearing is set for 18 February 2027, one day before the extension runs out.

## Why the board held back

The board asked DraftKings executives about reports that the company used AI to target losing bettors. It also asked how the company treats VIP customers who may show signs of a gambling problem. A third issue was procedural: a shareholder who has not completed suitability checks contributed to the delay, according to the outlet's account of the meeting.

Assistant Attorney General Delancey Houston said "additional time is needed to fully investigate those allegations." The reports are allegations, not findings. Board Chairman Chris Hebert said the action "is not a determination that DraftKings has engaged in any wrongdoing," and added that "we have a responsibility to examine these matters that could affect the integrity of gaming operations."

## The seven conditions

- **Suitability:** submit all suitability materials within 30 days, including petitions for the outstanding shareholder.
- **Ownership notice:** submit protocols for timely notice of shareholder ownership. No deadline was reported.
- **AI and prediction markets:** provide formal responses on AI use and prediction-market activity within 30 days of each written request.
- **Marketing:** review and certify responsible gambling compliance for marketing, commercials and digital ads within 30 days.
- **Reporting:** file monthly compliance reports on the 15th of each month.
- **Communications:** name a senior representative for board communications within seven days.
- **Cooperation:** cooperate fully with all board directives during the conditional period. No deadline was reported.

The coverage reviewed for this story did not include a DraftKings statement on the decision.

## Why it matters beyond Louisiana

The questions are the same ones other regulators are now asking. Maine's gaming regulators are monitoring how sportsbooks deploy AI, following the same reports about DraftKings and machine learning (\[\[maine-sportsbook-ai-monitoring-regulations\]\]). Massachusetts has sent operators a written request on AI use in marketing and promotions (\[\[massachusetts-sportsbook-ai-letter\]\]).

Louisiana adds a licensing lever. A renewal can be delayed or conditioned on how an operator uses data, not only on its paperwork. For a sportsbook running large promotional budgets, the February hearing is now a test of its AI and marketing practices as much as its suitability file.

DraftKings is also under scrutiny for its prediction-market product, which the board has asked it to address in writing (\[\[draftkings-predictions-ad-campaign-lawsuits\]\]).

## What happens before February

The 30-day deadlines for suitability materials, AI responses and marketing certification will run from the board's action. Monthly compliance reports are due on the 15th of each month. The February hearing will decide whether the extension becomes a renewal.
