**Hollywood Casino Aurora generated $17.4 million in July, almost double the roughly $8.7 million it took in July 2025, in its first full month operating from a $360 million land-based complex instead of a riverboat.** Illinois Gaming Board figures put the property third among the state's 17 casinos for the month, up from ninth in the first half of 2026.

Nearly 156,000 people came through the doors. Only Rivers Casino Des Plaines ($46.7m) and Wind Creek Chicago Southland ($19.7m) took more.

The new venue sits near Interstate 88 and the Chicago Premium Outlets, and carries 1,200 gaming positions, a 226-room hotel and a 12,000 square foot event centre. It opened in late June. Penn Entertainment reported that rated hotel guests spent 21% more per day than the average rated customer, and that 20% of visitors since opening had never been to Hollywood Aurora before.

Penn Entertainment CEO and President Jay Snowden was careful about how much of that to bank. "The business has almost essentially doubled in the first full month," he said, adding that "you get some benefit of everybody coming to see the property in that first month."

## The riverboat was the constraint all along

Illinois licensed casinos onto boats in 1990 and only released them to dry land in 2019\. The floating estate that resulted was small, awkward to reach, and impossible to attach a hotel to. Aurora's jump from ninth to third came without a new licence, a new market or a new customer base. It came from removing a physical constraint on the same licence.

That has a straightforward read for anyone weighing land-based capital in a mature US state: the replacement build, not the greenfield licence, is where the returns are sitting. Aurora added parking, rooms and event space to an existing catchment, and roughly doubled its take. Compare that against the pace of new-build projects in the same market, where [Bally's paused construction on its permanent Chicago casino](https://www.igamingnews.biz/ballys-chicago-casino-construction-pause/) over financing.

## What the first month does not prove

A grand opening pulls forward demand. Snowden said as much. The number that matters is not July's $17.4m but whether the property holds near it once the novelty fades and the Chicago winter arrives. The 20% new-visitor figure is the leading indicator worth tracking, because a replacement build only earns its cost if it enlarges the catchment rather than relocating it.

Illinois also offers no online casino, so none of this revenue faces the cannibalisation argument that has [frozen iGaming legalisation at a handful of states](https://www.igamingnews.biz/us-igaming-legalization-stall/). Aurora is competing for Chicago-area foot traffic against other buildings, not against a phone.

Single-asset owners have been reading the same maths. Ilitch Gaming's [move to full ownership of Ocean Casino Resort](https://www.igamingnews.biz/ilitch-gaming-ocean-casino-resort-full-ownership/) rests on the same premise: in a saturated market, control of the physical property and its amenity mix is the lever, not licence count.

## Winter is the real audit

Penn will report Aurora inside its Q3 numbers in the autumn. Two figures decide whether the $360m worked: admissions once the opening curve flattens, and hotel occupancy through the off season. Neither shows up until the fourth quarter.
