**Andria Vidler is stepping down as chief executive of Allwyn UK, operator of the National Lottery, effective September 7, 2026, with Phil Walker, a six-year William Hill veteran, named interim CEO from the same date.** Allwyn announced the move on August 19, saying the timing follows the completion of the "major transition milestones" tied to its takeover of the Fourth National Lottery Licence from Camelot.

Chairman Justin King framed it as a planned handover rather than a departure under pressure: "With the major transition milestones delivered, now is the right time to look to the future and build on solid foundations." Vidler echoed that in her own statement, saying "this feels like the right moment for me to pass on the baton," and will stay on through the end of October in an advisory role to support the handover.

Vidler led Allwyn UK through the biggest overhaul the National Lottery has seen since its 1994 launch, according to the company's own account, including modernising its technology and infrastructure, relaunching its app and website, and introducing New Lotto and a UK Powerball product. Allwyn's parent group puts the investment in National Lottery operations under her tenure at roughly £450 million. That work followed a licence transfer that was itself contested: the Court of Appeal only closed off [Camelot-linked challengers' final attempt to block Allwyn's licence](https://www.igamingnews.biz/national-lottery-appeal-tnlc/) earlier this month.

Walker's appointment is a notable profile choice for a state-lottery operator. He spent six years at William Hill, most recently as UK and Ireland managing director and chief commercial officer, putting a commercial betting executive in temporary charge of a monopoly lottery licence rather than a lottery-industry lifer. Walker said he was "excited and proud to be taking up the baton from Andria and joining such a vital national institution."

Neither company statement gives a timeline for naming a permanent successor, and Walker's title is explicitly interim, leaving open whether this is a placeholder appointment or a trial run ahead of a permanent decision. Allwyn UK now has to show that the "transition complete" framing holds up against harder commercial-growth targets, under a chief executive brought in from outside the lottery business.

## An outsider hire tests where the transition really ended

Calling the licence transition finished is a claim Allwyn UK's own numbers will now be judged against, not Vidler's. A commercial bookmaker's executive running the National Lottery, even on an interim basis, is the kind of cross-pollination the sector has seen more of this year as [suppliers and regulators hire from operators to build out capability](https://www.igamingnews.biz/gcgra-ciaran-carruthers-ceo/) rather than promote from inside their own walls.
